Shunt vs Hall-Effect Current Sensing for Battery Packs

Current-sensor selection affects the measurements used for monitoring and control. Define the operating range, low-current accuracy, temperature and isolation requirements before choosing between shunt and magnetic sensing. Compare the complete measurement chain rather than a sensor’s headline range.

1. Shunt: measure voltage drop
2. Hall sensor: measure magnetic field
3. Compare complete measurement chains

Compare error, loss and integration constraints

A shunt measures the voltage across a known resistance and adds loss to the current path. A Hall-based implementation measures a magnetic field and has different installation and interference considerations. Both require review of offset, drift, bandwidth and the assembled measurement environment.

The monitor reports current when the pack is idle

Check whether a real standby load is present before treating the result as sensor offset. Compare measurements with an appropriate reference over the relevant temperature range and distinguish offset from scaling error. A small persistent error can matter when current is integrated over time.

Acceptance and handover

Record the exact hardware and firmware revisions, the conditions under which the system was assessed, and the person who approved the outcome. Keep unresolved items visible in the commissioning record. Installation and fault validation require an approved procedure and qualified personnel.

Frequently asked question

Does an isolated sensor eliminate calibration checks?

No. Isolation and measurement accuracy are separate requirements. Verify the assembled signal chain against its own acceptance criteria.
